Elite field at the 117th 2013 Boston Marathon April 15

World's oldest annual marathon since 1897, the Boston Marathon, hosted by several cities in Greater Boston in eastern Massachusetts, USA and held traditionally on Patriots' Day on the 3rd Monday of April, will start for the 117th time coming Monday 15 April 2013 as 117th 2013 John Hancock Boston Marathon.
It has been managed by the Boston Athletic Association since 1897 a year after the first modern-day marathon competition at the 1896 Olympics in Athens.

It is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race and one of the six World Marathon Majors (WMM). However performances at Boston Marathon are not ratified by IAAF as eligible for World record consideration due to the elevation drop of more than 1:1000 or 1m/km and point-to-point in Start-to-Finish separation measurement of more than 21km, hence the feat of 2:03:02 performed by Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya on 18 April 2011 right here was merely recognised by IAAF as "fastest Marathon ever run" while the then world record of 2:03:59 Berlin 2008 held by distance running legend Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia remained till Patrick Makau of Kenya ran 2:03:38 in Berlin 5 months later which is the existing world record.
