The start of the 10th anniversary edition of the Tokyo Marathon 2016 on 28 February, an IAAF Gold Label Road Race, will mark the 2016 opening of an Abbott World Marathon Majors (AWMM) race and the last stop of the AWMM Series IX which has a new race series format inaugurated in Tokyo Marathon 2015.

The new AWMM format features a rotating start and finish at each of the 6 affiliated city-races viz Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York in that order of time sequence, alongside the quadrennial Olympic Marathon and the biennial IAAF World Championships Marathon.
The current Series IX which started in Tokyo 2015 will end in Tokyo 2016, likewise Series X will begin in Boston 2016 and end in Boston 2017, Series XI will begin in 2017 London and end in 2018 London and so on.

Each series will determine the AWMM world's best male and female marathoners via a point-awarding system, 25/16/9/4/1 points for positions 1/2/3/4/5 respectively.
The men's and women's champions will be awarded a prize money of USD500,000 each to be paid over the course of 5 years at USD100,000 each (in line with the strengthened anti-doping efforts)
If a runner enters more than 2 races in a series , his/her total points scored are derived from the best 2 races  only
